Autism-Communications & Crisis Prevention
Course Description:
This specialized training prepares first responders and community partners to effectively and safely interact with individuals on the autism spectrum. Participants will learn to identify key indicators of autism, adapt communication techniques for improved understanding, and employ specialized de-escalation techniques.
Participants will also gain critical insights into the unique safety challenges faced by autistic children, particularly regarding wandering/elopement. The course will introduce valuable resources and tools designed to prevent and effectively respond to these incidents. A culminating tabletop exercise will provide a realistic, hands-on experience in managing a wandering/elopement scenario.
This is a 7 hour course that runs from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. This course is for anyone in public safety (Police, Fire, EMS, Dispatch), private security, healthcare, education, human services, volunteer services, or emergency management.
Cost is $200 - A free lunch will be provided at no additional cost
